Chapter Ten

I reach for Mo’s arm. “You know, maybe I’ll go with you guys to lunch,” I say, not wanting to let Mo go anywhere with Wes if there’s even a remote chance he’s the killer.

She tugs her arm free and gives me a look. “What’s up with you? You know this is a date.”

I have to tell her the truth. She needs to be prepared. “Okay, Mo, I know you aren’t going to want to hear this, but we believe someone who drives a black Chevy Silverado was following Cynthia Townsend and may have tampered with Will’s car to cause the accident.”

She laughs. “And you think that someone is Wes? Jo, come on. He just moved to town. He didn’t even know Will and Cynthia.”

“That’s not exactly true. He and Will had an argument Monday morning.”

“No, they didn’t. Will yelled. Wes was a perfect gentleman.” She places her hand on my shoulder and looks me in the eye. “Trust me. He’s not the guy you’re looking for. He’s the guy I’m looking for.”

“But, Mo, you don’t know him. You don’t know that he’s a good guy.”

“No, you don’t know that, but I do. I get that you’re just trying to look out for me because you love me, but I’m a big girl. I can handle myself.” She lets go of me. “I’m going now. Thanks for the coffee.”

She walks out, and since I can’t exactly tackle her to the ground to stop her, I have no choice but to watch her get into Wes’s truck and drive away.

Jamar walks in, and you’d think a local celebrity stepped into Cup of Jo. All of my customers go over to talk to him. He’s smiling as he approaches me, but his face falls when he sees I’m upset. “What’s wrong, Jo?”

“I’m worried about Mo. She’s dating the new guy in town, and I’m not sure he’s a good guy.” I don’t want to share any more details with Jamar just yet, so I leave it at the concerned big sister angle.

“I see. Want me to offer him a free training session? I could grill him for you, and that way Mo won’t get mad at you for giving her new guy the third degree because I’d be doing it for you.”

“That’s sweet of you, Jamar, but I’m not sure how to introduce you to him and pull that off without Mo figuring out exactly what we’re up to.”

He nods as he ties on his apron. “You’re right. She’d probably see right through it. Tell you what. If they come in here when you’re not around, I’ll play it off as trying to welcome the new guy to town. If you aren’t around when I do it, Mo might not get suspicious.”

“Smart thinking. Thanks, Jamar. You really are a great friend.”

“And employee, I hope.”

“Of course, and speaking of that, I’m going to close for renovations starting tomorrow. We’re tearing down the wall between here and Cam’s Kitchen to make it one place.
