Chapter Ten
I reach for Moâs arm. âYou know, maybe Iâll go with you guys to lunch,â I say, not wanting to let Mo go anywhere with Wes if thereâs even a remote chance heâs the killer.
She tugs her arm free and gives me a look. âWhatâs up with you? You know this is a date.â
I have to tell her the truth. She needs to be prepared. âOkay, Mo, I know you arenât going to want to hear this, but we believe someone who drives a black Chevy Silverado was following Cynthia Townsend and may have tampered with Willâs car to cause the accident.â
She laughs. âAnd you think that someone is Wes? Jo, come on. He just moved to town. He didnât even know Will and Cynthia.â
âThatâs not exactly true. He and Will had an argument Monday morning.â
âNo, they didnât. Will yelled. Wes was a perfect gentleman.â She places her hand on my shoulder and looks me in the eye. âTrust me. Heâs not the guy youâre looking for. Heâs the guy Iâm looking for.â
âBut, Mo, you donât know him. You donât know that heâs a good guy.â
âNo, you donât know that, but I do. I get that youâre just trying to look out for me because you love me, but Iâm a big girl. I can handle myself.â She lets go of me. âIâm going now. Thanks for the coffee.â
She walks out, and since I canât exactly tackle her to the ground to stop her, I have no choice but to watch her get into Wesâs truck and drive away.
Jamar walks in, and youâd think a local celebrity stepped into Cup of Jo. All of my customers go over to talk to him. Heâs smiling as he approaches me, but his face falls when he sees Iâm upset. âWhatâs wrong, Jo?â
âIâm worried about Mo. Sheâs dating the new guy in town, and Iâm not sure heâs a good guy.â I donât want to share any more details with Jamar just yet, so I leave it at the concerned big sister angle.
âI see. Want me to offer him a free training session? I could grill him for you, and that way Mo wonât get mad at you for giving her new guy the third degree because Iâd be doing it for you.â
âThatâs sweet of you, Jamar, but Iâm not sure how to introduce you to him and pull that off without Mo figuring out exactly what weâre up to.â
He nods as he ties on his apron. âYouâre right. Sheâd probably see right through it. Tell you what. If they come in here when youâre not around, Iâll play it off as trying to welcome the new guy to town. If you arenât around when I do it, Mo might not get suspicious.â
âSmart thinking. Thanks, Jamar. You really are a great friend.â
âAnd employee, I hope.â
âOf course, and speaking of that, Iâm going to close for renovations starting tomorrow. Weâre tearing down the wall between here and Camâs Kitchen to make it one place.
